Taught by the people who run the range
Joel Fulton
Co-owner and lead instructor, NRA and USCCA training counselor
Joel and his brother Jared started Southside Sportsman Club and Freedom Firearms in Battle Creek, where they now train more than 750 students a year. Joel is a certified NRA and USCCA training counselor, has testified as an expert witness in court, and has spoken for Second Amendment groups around Michigan.
His classes explain the reasoning behind every technique instead of running you through a video. Questions are welcome at any point, and no one gets singled out.

Why students train with us
Hands on, not videos
You will not sit and watch a screen all day. We teach the reasoning behind grip, stance and safe handling, then work with you on the range one on one.
Our own indoor range
Classroom and live fire happen in the same building at 539 Capital Avenue SW. Range time is part of the class, and a rental pistol is there if you need one.
Certified the same day
You leave with the certificate you need to apply for your Michigan CPL. There is nothing to wait for in the mail.
What our students say
Nice place a lot of pistols and small range out back. 3 or 4 customers and 3 employees no one spoke to me all busy with customer they seemed to know. Went elsewhere didn't want to bother them.
This is the Best Shop I’ve seen in Town. Fantastic service and excellent customer service and support. About the picture (you know if you know). Hahaha. Thanks Guys
Questions students ask
Is this class state approved?
Yes. The CPL class is the USCCA Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals course, which Michigan recognizes for the concealed pistol license, and your certificate is valid for your application at the county clerk.
Do I need my own gun?
No. Bring your pistol and ammunition if you have them. If you do not, rental pistols and ammunition are available at the range starting at $30.
How long is the class and what does it cost?
The CPL class runs 8 hours, including about 3 hours on the range, and costs $149. You reserve your seat with a $30 deposit online and pay the balance on class day. The CPL renewal class is a 4 hour afternoon class and costs $69.
What should I bring?
A valid state ID, a pen, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes, and your own pistol and ammunition if you have them. Coffee, breakfast and lunch are included, so bring snacks only if you want them.
When do I get my certificate?
The same day, at the end of class. You can take it to the Calhoun County Clerk and apply right away.
Do you teach beginners?
Yes. A lot of our students are handling a pistol for the first time. You will be coached at your own pace and nobody is put on the spot.
